Separate imperial justifications from the mechanisms that made expansion possible
If you missed rationale questions, sort evidence into four buckets: economic interests, strategic rivalry, nationalism, and racial-religious ideology. A source can contain more than one, but you should identify which claim is doing the argumentative work.
For state-expansion questions, stop treating industrial technology as an automatic explanation. Steamships, quinine, railways, telegraphs, and machine guns changed possibilities, but conquest still depended on diplomacy, local alliances, finance, administration, and resistance.
When an imperial source claims progress or civilization, source it before accepting its categories. Ask what the author gains by presenting unequal rule as benevolent and what evidence from colonized communities might complicate the claim.
